About Gamcheon Culture Village

By visitbusan.net

Gamcheon’s history dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, but its true transformation occurred in the mid-20th century during the Korean War. With Busan being the only area of the peninsula under South Korean control, refugees sought shelter there, leading to the establishment of makeshift houses in Gamcheon.

Busan City One Day Tour

Despite the end of the conflict, the village remained impoverished until 2007, when the city launched a major renovation project. Artists were enlisted to revitalize the area into a cultural and tourist destination. The transformation began in 2009, resulting in the colorful and vibrant landscape that characterizes Gamcheon Cultural Village today.

This unique district, often dubbed the “Santorini of Korea” or the “Machu Picchu of Korea,” with its small, brightly colored houses resembling Lego bricks, has become a must-visit attraction in Busan.
